The great thing about Montreal is that it is so diverse. From the farmer’s market in the Little Italy district to the bustling Montreal Casino and La Ronda theme park you won’t be short of things to do. The Montreal Botanical Garden is also worth a visit and if you’re looking for somewhere to party the night away, venture to Sainte-Catherine Street East where some of the most popular clubs can be found.
If you want to put your car rental to the test and venture further afield, Ottawa is just a short drive to the west of Montreal. As the capital of Canada, this is a bustling location complete with remarkable Victorian architecture and riverside attractions that are sure to take your breath away.
Driving in Montreal
When driving through Montreal, stay on the right hand side of the road unless you are overtaking. As a visitor, it’s worth knowing that all road signs are in French where “arrêt" means stop, "congestion" means traffic and "bloqué" means the road/exit is blocked.
On the island of Montreal, you can’t turn right at a red light. This rule applies throughout much of Canada so take extra care as you navigate the extensive one way networks.
With regards to parking, leaving your car is relatively easy and inexpensive. Metered street parking and municipal parking lots are the responsibility of Stationnement de Montréal, which has a modern pay and go metered street parking system. There are also plenty of private parking lots but these are often slightly more pricey.
