DVLA Regulations

Advice to Europcar customers on the abolition of the paper counterpart to the UK photocard licence.

MobileSince 8 June 2015, UK driving licence holders hiring within the UK will need to use “Share Driving Licence”, the new online service from the DVLA, for validation of their driving record.

How will this affect the way you hire a vehicle?

From 8 June 2015, the paper counterpart to the UK photocard driving licence ceased to be a valid document. UK driving licence holders hiring a vehicle from us within the UK and Northern Ireland now need to use the online DVLA service “Share Driving Licence”.

  • DVLA: “Share Driving Licence” is available online at https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence.  A UK licence holder will need to access “Share Driving Licence” no more than 21 days before collecting their rental vehicle to generate a one-time passcode.  Details of their driving licence number, national insurance number and home postcode will be required for this.  The passcode is valid for a maximum period of 21 days and must be presented when picking up the rental vehicle from Europcar.
  • Not working?: Any drivers that are unable to obtain a passcode should contact the DVLA on 0300 083 0013 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm)
  • Alternatives: Europcar can help drivers obtain the passcode by giving them access to ‘Share Driving Licence’ when they come to pick up the rental vehicle, however, drivers should keep in mind that they will need to have their driving licence number, national insurance number and home postcode to hand when they are accessing the DVLA website - whether that be at home or at our premises. Keep in mind: You will need to have your National Insurance number at hand when you are accessing the DVLA websitesite - either at home, or at our premisis.
  • Hiring in the Republic of Ireland?: Europcar Ireland will require all UK licence holders to provide evidence of their driving record (entitlements/endorsements) before the rental vehicle can be released. Drivers will therefore need to generate a one-time passcode using the DVLA’s ‘Share Driving Licence’ service no more than 21 days before the rental start date (https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence) and take it with them when they come to collect the rental vehicle.
  • UK licence holders hiring abroad: will be unaffected except in the Republic of Ireland
  • Non-UK licence holders hiring in the UK: will be unaffected
