You might be relaxing on the beach or enjoying a swinging city, using Europcar will help you get the most out of your Italian Holiday.

Driving in Italy

You do not have to possess an international driver’s licence to rent a car in Italy - a EU licence is accepted.

The national speed limit is 130 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h on main roads, 90 km/h on secondary roads. In urban areas, the speed limit is set between 50-70 km/h, indicated by signposting. Speed must be reduced according to visibility at night, in school zones, and narrow or steep roads. Depending on weather conditions, the speed limit changes to 90 km/h on roads outside built-up areas, and 110 km/h on motorways.

Parking in Italy is a bit different. In built-up areas, parking is permitted on the right-hand side of the road with two-way traffic. In a one-way street, parking is allowed on both sides of the street, but only if there is at least 3 metres space left of the road for cars to pass.

In big towns, paid parking zones are enforced and indicated by blue road signs. Paid hours can vary and some times of day are free, such as Sundays. Zones with limited parking times are indicated by blue stripes. In the capital city Rome, parking is prohibited in the historic centre from Monday-Friday, between 7am-8pm.
