Driving in Germany

You can rent a car with a driving licence from EU and EEA countries. International driving licences are accepted but not legally required.

There are no tolls charges for private cars on German roads.

Cars overtake on the left, with some exceptions. You can overtake trams on the right, unless there is not enough room to pass, when you can overtake on the left.

Parking is prohibited within five metres of pedestrian crossings and intersections, 10 metres before traffic lights, and within 15 metres of a public vehicle stop.


The maximum speed limit for private cars and other vehicles on motorways and dual carriageways is 130 km/h. The speed limit is 100 km/h on other roads.
