Driving in Spain

The national speed limit is 120 km/h on motorways and dual carriageways, 100 km/h on roads with more than one lane in both direction and 90 km/h on ordinary roads.

In cities, notably Madrid and Barcelona, there are specific rules for bus lanes. Some of the lanes are marked with "BUS-VAO" which stands for "Vehículos de Alta Ocupación" ("High Occupancy Vehicles"). This means that those lanes are exclusive to buses, motorcycles and cars with at least two (or three) people on board.

A paid parking system is enforced throughout the country. In Madrid there are regulated "SER" parking zones, where spaces are indicated by blue or green lines. Parking is limited to 1 or 2 hours in these zones.

There are also blue parking zones indicated by "zona azul" ou "zona O.R.A." signs. Maximum stay here is limited to two hours during the day, however there is no limit during 8pm to 8am.

Be aware that the Police often give on the spot fines. These are reduced by 50% if you pay within 20 days of the fine occurring. Visiting motorists must pay their fines immediately.

When you are driving in Spain, you’ll encounter tolls on the motorways. You can pay for these either with cash or credit cards. Most tolls also have an electronic payment system called “Telepeaje” or “Via T”. Drivers can buy these transmitters from banks or petrol stations and attach it to the windscreen of the vehicle.

Vehicle hire in Spain

Renting a car in Spain gives you endless possibilities to explore the country, any way you choose. Spending the weekend in Madrid? A city car like the Nissan Micra or VW Polo Automatic are amongst our popular choices. If you are here on a longer trip, or in a bigger party, a larger car makes sense. And should you need a van rental, vehicles such as Peugeot Expert and Iveco Daily are at hand. Luxury car rentals like the Mercedes V Class Automatic ensure you’ll see the country is style.

What not to miss while driving in Spain

More than just a beach destination, Spain is filled with diverse cultures. Masterpieces of Moorish and Islamic architecture, Alhambra palace in Granada, and Alcázar of Seville, plus the Roman aqueduct in Ségovie are must-visits for architecture fans. Spain will also delight foodies, from the Boqueria market in the heart of Barcelona, to the coastal tavernas of the Costa Brava serving up fresh fish.
