Discover Milan and surroundings by car
Milan is world-famous for its prestige shopping districts, so if you want to make a high-end purchase – you won’t be disappointed with the Quadrilatero della Moda fashion district offering a premium retail experience. The Galleria & Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is also the largest mall in the world attracting those looking for top labels such as Prada and Versace.
As well as being the global fashion capital, Milan has a rich culture and is home to some spectacular attractions including a host of must-see museums. These include the Palazzo Reale (a former royal palace complete with large halls, refined furnishings and sweeping staircases) as well as Pinacoteca di Brera which houses one of the main collections of Renaissance art in Italy.
While you’re in the area, be sure to also visit the church of Santa Maria della Grazie and its adjoining refectory both of which are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you’ll find Leonardo da Vinci’s most-famous work – The Last Supper.
If you want to venture outside of the city and put your car to the test, how about a trip south to the capital city of Rome where you can tour the famous Colosseum or visit the Roman Forum?
Driving in Milan
Driving throughout Italy is, on the whole, a pleasant experience. The roads tend to be well-maintained with signposts guiding you towards top attractions. That said; it’s always important to navigate new roads with care and to pay particular attention to local speed limits.
As a visitor, it’s worth keeping in mind that access to Milan’s city centre is limited by the Congestion Charge area (Area C) from Monday to Friday at varying times. To enter Area C, you must purchase a ticket in advance. For this reason, you may prefer to park on the outskirts of the city in a secured lot or a blue-lined bay and make use of the Milan Metro network. There are also tramlines to help make your journey as smooth as possible.
