Dating back over 1000 years and with a fascinating maritime and trading history, the compact and culturally significant city of Bremen makes for an interesting adventure.
Once part of the Hanseatic League – an economic alliance between trading cities in Northern Europe – Bremen vividly celebrates its vibrant history. Indeed, there are many attractions which reflect the importance of trade in the area with the Roland Statue symbolising liberation and freedom of trade. Head to the Speicher XI Dockland Museum to unravel the 120-year story of Bremen’s port and don’t miss the Cotton Exchange, a place of great importance for over 100 years.
Other attractions in the city of Bremen include the Market Square with the Town Hall being the most beautiful and dominant building in the area. Make your way to the western side of the Town Hall and you’ll also find the Bremen Town Musicians statue thought to bring luck to all who touch it.
With a hire car from Europcar Bremen City, you’ll also be well-placed to venture further afield with Hamburg being just over an hour’s drive away. Here, you’ll find a network of stunning canals, quaint boats, exquisite architecture and a host of waterfront eateries. You could even head to Hanover or nip across to the Netherlands. The world is your oyster!
Driving in Bremen
In Bremen and throughout the rest of Germany people stay on the right hand side of the road and overtake on the left, so be extra cautious if you’re from a country where these rules are reversed.
Many of German’s cities including Bremen have green zones with vehicles requiring a green sticker to enter. Keep in mind that a Low Emission Zone (Umweltzone) exists in the Altstadt (east of the city centre) and parts of Neustadt and Schwachhausen.
On-street parking is prevalent throughout the city; however, the maximum stay is usually two hours. Secure car parks are dotted throughout the city with free parking available on the outskirts. Park and ride locations include: Hansa Carré, Hansator, Hemelinger Hafen, AG Weser, Grolland, Sielhof and Zum Kuhhirten.
