Discover Berlin and surroundings by car
Berlin Tegel Airport is just a half an hour drive away from the bustling and cosmopolitan city centre. If you’re eager to see all the major sights, hiring a car makes perfect sense allowing you to hop from one place to the next. Top attractions include the bustling hub of Alexanderplatz with the impressive television tower Fernsehturm nearby, the Reichstag building, Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie – a former border crossing and one of the most important landmarks in Berlin.
If you want to find out more about World War II, head to the Jewish Museum or visit the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. With easy access to four wheels, you could perhaps also head to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp which is just a 50 minute drive from the capital.
For a touch of light relief, you could then head to the AquaDom which features more than 5,000 creatures and a play area for the little ones. Or, take a 30 minute ride to Potsdam where you’ll find the sensationally beautiful Sanssouci Palace and Park.
Driving in Berlin
When driving in Berlin, you’ll notice that the streets are well signposted which makes it easy to navigate from A to B. There are many cycle paths running throughout the city, however, so be sure to check your mirrors carefully before making any manoeuvres.
In Berlin and throughout the rest of Germany, you must stay on the right hand side of the road and overtake on the left. Seatbelts must be worn and children under 12 should sit in the back of your vehicle. Be aware that in low-pollution zones only cars with green stickers can enter.
There is both free and paid parking in the city centre. It is often free to park on the street and if it’s not you will find parking metres nearby. Parking signs are marked with the letter P on a blue sign. There’s also a well-developed network of parking lots where you can leave your vehicle for longer periods of time.
