Discover Lille and surroundings by car
As Lille was actually Flemish until it was invaded by Louis XIV back in 1667, the city has a strong Flemish influence which is reflected in the architecture of the area. Buildings throughout the old part of the city date back to around the 17th century and boast a stunning Baroque design.
With easy access to four wheels you’ll be able to discover the very best of the city in comfort. Top attractions include Parc Zoologique which is favoured by animal lovers and families as well as La Vieille Bourse – the Old Stock Exchange – which is perhaps the city’s most-attractive building. What’s more, don’t miss Palais des Beaux-Arts which rivals the Louvre in Paris and be sure to pass by Lille Citadelle which was built to protect the city shortly after it was invaded by Louis XIV. This iconic building remains a French military base today which means you can only tour the outskirts.
If you want to venture further afield and really put your hire car through its paces, Lille is situated just over a two hour drive from the French capital of Paris. Here, you will find a wealth of unforgettable attractions such as the Eiffel Tower and Disneyland Paris which is a delight for all ages.
Driving in Lille
When driving throughout Lille and the rest of France, stay on the right hand side of the road unless overtaking. Navigation is relatively straightforward thanks to the organised road network with motorways providing a hassle-free way to travel between cities. Please be aware that many of the major roads are toll roads and you will be charged for using them.
There are two on-street parking zones in Lille: the orange and the green zones with the green zone offering a slightly longer maximum stay. Rates are variable but if you want to keep costs down you can park for free on the outskirts of the city and make use of the Park and Ride services operating throughout Lille.
