Discover Olbia and its surroundings by car

Away from the industrial area around the airport, the historic centre of Olbia boasts plenty of architectural gems such as the 11th century Basilica of San Simplicio, which has been an important monument in the history of Sardinia. The Sa Testa holy well is a prime example of Sardinian religious temples created during the Bronze Age and is also well worth a visit.

If you are travelling onwards from Olbia there are some great destinations to discover. Make a trip to the northern tip of the island to see the most incredible sunset at Moon Valley in Santa Teresa di Gallura (66 kilometres away from Olbia).

An hour and a half by car from Olbia, the geo-marine national park Arcipelago di La Maddalena is a serenely beautiful collection of islands between Corsica and Sardinia. Its crystalline waters and granite coastline are ideal for exploring, either by boat or on foot, and are home to protected and unique wildlife. These islands have been inhabited since prehistoric times and have a diverse history, from the Romans to Napoleon Bonaparte.

Costa Smeralda may be one of the most expensive locations in Europe, but don’t let that stop you from visiting! Beloved by the rich, royal and famous, Costa Smeralda, meaning Emerald Coast, was named because of its crystal blue-green waters. The whole coastline is 55 kilometres long, from Golfo di Cugnana to Golfo di Arzachena, and is 32 kilometres from Olbia. While Porto Cervo is home to flashy yachts and expensive restaurants, head to the hilltop towns of San Pantaleo and Arzachena for less expensive dining but with the same amazing views.
