Discover Lille and the surrounding area by car

The location of Lille near Belgium means it is a city with a rich history. The Flemish influence remains strong today, with architecture that is noticeably different from other French cities. Culture vultures will be happy with any of the three most popular museums: the Palais des Beaux Arts (20th Century Masters, Rubens, and Van Dyck), the Musée d’Art Moderne (Miró, Modigliani and Picasso) and La Piscine Musée d’Art et l’Industrie (an art gallery in a swimming pool).

Foodies will be in their element with indulgent home-style cooking at Au Vieux de la Vieille, craft Belgian beer, and waffles from Meert, which has been in business since 1761.

The Citadel of Lille is a star-shaped fortress definitely worth a visit. Designed by a French architect to commemorate the capture of the city in 1667, it is now the HQ for NATO France. Comprising around 60 million bricks, the colossal building takes pride of place inside the largest green space in the city. Lille Zoo is also next door if you want to make a day of it.

Contemporary art fans should check out LaM, a museum with over 4,500 works of contemporary art, modern art and art brut. And whilst you are there, just across the road is the eclectic Windmill Museum.

If you fancy broadening your horizons, there are several interesting places to visit within an hour from Lille by car. And if you fancy travelling a little further, it is possible to travel to Brussels and back in a day, to enjoy some sightseeing in the Belgian capital.

Rotterdam is 229 kilometres away and Paris is 220 kilometres away, both easily accessible by car.
