Driving in Seville
On main roads in and around Seville the speed limit is capped at 50 km/h, while country roads are 90 km/h and a maximum of 120 km/h on motorways. When cars overtake you on the motorway they will flash their lights at you, do not panic!
There are a number of one-way streets and dead ends in the historic centre so it is best to avoid driving this part of the city. However, there are lots of parking options. Certain car parks cost €2 per hour, whilst on-street parking is strictly limited to 45-minute stays. It is advised to park on the edge of the city and navigate the rest by foot.
There are several tolls across Spanish roads. You can pay these with cash and credit/debit cards. There are specific lanes for any cards paying with credit/debit cards.
Discover Seville and surroundings by car
Seville is without a doubt the jewel of Andalusia, it can be enjoyed on the cheap, strolling through the impressive Plaza de Espana at sunset, or ogling the decadence of the many churches and cathedrals. But the rest of Andalusia is also worth visiting, a microcosm of the best that Spain has to offer, with the warmest climate in Europe. Religious processions, sherry tasting, guitar-playing troubadours and flamenco dancers, this heady mix makes for a memorable trip.
Do not miss the chance to roam the cobblestone streets and whitewashed buildings of Carmona (34 kilometres) or the sprawling Roman ruins of Merida (192 kilometres) to the north.
Start planning your escape today!
Just an hour drive south of Seville, this 11th century fortress is surely worth the trip. Escape the searing heat of the city and take shelter in the octagonal hilltop fort. Emblematic of the rich cultural history of the south, with a strong Islamic influence, the Alcazar de Jerez boats ornate, peaceful gardens, and an exceptionally well preserved Arabic bath house.
The Costa del Sol may have gained a reputation that evokes sunburnt Brits rather than a relaxing place for adventure, however this long stretch of coastline is popular for a reason. Packed with tiny fishing towns, Arabic castles and long sandy beaches, driving along the Costa del Sol could not be more enjoyable. Starting in Seville, pick up a hire car with Europcar and coast through the wild Andalusian countryside before hitting the beach. Both Algeciras and Tarifa are also within driving distance from where you can access car ferries to Morocco.
Seville is brimming with impressive monuments and jaw-dropping buildings. Check out the Museo des Bellas Artes with its gilded 17th century frescos, or the Catedral & Giralda built in the 12th century, embellished with gothic gargoyles and hints of Islamic architecture. While in Andalusia you cannot miss the opportunity to catch a flamenco show, the most authentic are staged nightly at the Casa de la Memoria. Equally as evocative, and every bit as traditional, is the Semana Santa taking place from Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday, when the city transforms as religious processions glide through the city in a haze of incense and candles.
