Driving in Oviedo

The largest concentration of limestone in Atlantic Europe, Los Picos de Europa National Park (85 kilometres) shows the scars of years of glacial erosion with its dramatic cliffs and lakes. This dense forestland is home to over 100 species of birds like the griffon vulture and golden eagle; in addition to deer, wolves and bears. There are several villages and churches in the area that narrate the history of Los Picos.
An hour and a half by car, the town of Léon with its soaring cathedral is a great day trip from Oviedo. Historic architecture and the modern day converge in this city - a real insight into the spirit of northern Spain.

Around 50 kilometres from the town centre, Casa y Cercado del Lobo is a memorable park dedicated to the endangered Iberian wolf. An insight into the race and their habits, you will also get the chance to see two wolves - Paco and Tolo - in the sprawling enclosure. Casa y Cercado del Lobo is 45 minutes from Oviedo centre, accessible by car via the A-63.
The Palace of Congress should be seen if only for its futuristic architecture. Designed by top Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the white sheeted form looks like a winged insect. Two kilometres from the city centre, travel by car to reach the Congress.
Oviedo is filled with some impressive squares (Plaza de la Constitución and Plaza Fontán with its busy food market) in the old town, which lead to winding streets filled with unique boutiques and great restaurants - Gloria by 2-star Asturias chef Nacho Manzano is a must-visit. Seek out some of the statues, including the quirkier memorial to Woody Allen - the director chose Oviedo for his 2008 film Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
