Driving in Paris
To rent a car in Paris, you need to have a valid EU driver’s licence.
In the city centre, the speed limit is 30 km/h, and the Paris ring road (périphérique) has a separate speed limit of 70 km/h. The limit on toll motorways is 80 km/h. Be aware that speed limits are reduced by 10 km/h on motorways in wet weather.
Paris is known for its unique layout, with the city divided into 20 districts (called arrondissements) that spiral out from the city centre. Paris is congested at peak times, particularly along the main boulevards, but the flow of traffic through the centre is consistent throughout the day.
Bus lanes are reserved for buses, although they are often shared with cyclists. Occasionally bus lanes are physically separated from other lanes to stop cars from entering.
Be aware of the many cyclists on the roads, particularly in tourist areas where they may not be familiar with the roads, and/or cycling.
Along the Seine are embankment roads (called voies sur berge) that can be used by cars when they are open; however, they are increasingly being designated for pedestrian use only.
Discover Paris and the surrounding area by car
One of the benefits of hiring a car in Paris is the opportunity to explore the surrounding areas, such as the beautiful Château de Fontainebleau and forest, and the inimitable Versailles and its spectacular gardens, both just an hour away by car.
If you want to explore further afield from Paris, Reims, the home of Champagne (147 kilometres away), the seaside resort of Deauville (200 kilometres away) and Lille (226 kilometres away) are all within easy driving distance.
Disneyland Paris is one of the main attractions in Europe, and boasts two theme parks, seven hotels, a golf course, and dozens of attractions including Big Thunder Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the classic Space Mountain. There is endless fun to be had and hiring a car with Europcar means you can travel there easily and in comfort. Whether you pick up your car rental for an onward journey or finish at the park itself, Europcar has flexible options to suit you.
Things to see in Paris
From quintessential museums such as the Louvre or the Musée d’Orsay, to resplendent parks and riverside walks, there is so much to see and do in Paris. While the centre of the city might house Notre-Dame and most of the museums, there is also a lot to be seen in the outer ‘arrondissements’. Parisian favourites, the Buttes Chaumont park, with its grottos and waterfalls, and the leafy Canal Saint Martin and cobbled Montmartre where a lot of the cult film Amelie was shot, are destinations not to be missed.
