The capital of Baden-Wurttemberg, Stuttgart is an iconic city in south-east Germany. Located around 125 miles south of Frankfurt, the sixth largest city in the country has a sharp and modern appearance. But underneath that shiny exterior is a city with soul, reflected in the numerous museums and cozy wine taverns.

In Stuttgart itself, the speed limit is 50 km/h. On those sections of autobahn (federal highway) where a limit applies, and on highways, it is 130 km/h. The speed limit on other roads is 100 km/h and is reduced further in residential areas and around schools.

Many stretches of autobahn have no speed limit, though heavy fines apply for dangerous driving on any road in Germany.

There are no toll charges for cars on German roads.

On-street parking spaces are scarce downtown, and it is easier to find spots in parking lots. Paid on-street parking is enforced from Monday to Saturday from 8am to 10pm, with a maximum stay of one hour. There are several multi-story garages with no time limits.

Dating back to the 11th century, Hohenzollern Castle is a magical place just an hour from Stuttgart. Regarded as one of the best castles in Germany, this is the former seat of the house of Hohenzollern, with breathtaking views of Hechingen and Bisingen.

Around 55 miles from Stuttgart, the medieval town of Ulm houses the tallest church in the world. The spire of Ulm Minster is 530 feet tall, and was extended to outstrip the height of Cologne Cathedral.

Driving onwards from Stuttgart, explore the Black Forest (75 miles away), the glamorous casinos of Baden-Baden (60 miles) and the romantic town of Heidelberg (70 miles), all within easy driving distance. 

With the company HQ in Stuttgart, you’ll find the Mercedes-Benz Museum located here too. Offering insight into more than 130 years of the history of the automobile industry and the brand itself, you can spend hours in this vast and swanky museum. The 180,000-square-foot space has nine floors with over 1,500 exhibits and 160 vehicles on show. There are several rotating exhibitions, and guided tours are available in eight different languages. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9am to 6pm. Parking is available in a secure multi-story garage, from €1 per hour. The museum is a ten-minute drive from the center of Stuttgart.

Also known as The Schloss of Solitude, Stuttgart Palace is six miles outside of the city. Commissioned by Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg for his hunting lodge and summer residence, this lavish palace and gardens offer a great vantage point over Stuttgart. In-depth tours of the rooms are available, with their intricate late rococo and early neoclassical decoration. Head out into the gardens afterwards, walking along the Alley of Solitude, which stretches for over seven miles from the north gate of the Palace to Ludwigsburg.

Stuttgart may have a cosmopolitan façade, but underneath there is a rich cultural seam. Popular attractions include St. John’s Church, a Gothic structure sat in the middle of Lake Feuersee; and the gleaming Stuttgart City Library, one of the most spectacular modern libraries on the planet, with an open roof terrace boasting great city views.

Green spaces abound in the center, including Killesberg Park with its outdoor pool, miniature train and cafés, and Neckar Park, best experienced in springtime or during the September beer festival.
