Driving in Berlin

Berlin is located close to key motorways, making it is easy to access by car. On German roads, the maximum speed limit on motorways and dual carriageways is 130 km/h, and 100 km/h on other roads. On all other road types the speed limit is 50 km/h unless signposted otherwise, and is reduced in residential areas and around schools.

The tram system in Berlin is the third largest in the world, with 22 lines. Unlike cars, you must overtake trams on the right, unless there is not enough room to pass, in which case you can overtake on the left. Watch out for passengers getting on or off trams.

Cycling in the city is also very popular, so be aware of cyclists - especially when cycle paths merge onto the carriageway.

There are several underground parking facilities where you can park for 24 hours or more. Berlin has several free parking areas outside of the city centre.

There are no toll charges for private cars on German roads.

There are five immense museums on Museum Island (Museumsinsel), including Pergamonmuseum where visitors can view the remarkable Ishtar Gate, and the Neues Museum, where the famous bust of the Ancient Egyptian queen Nefertiti is the showpiece exhibit.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, a 1.3 kilometre stretch of it was turned into a blank sheet for artists. Today, East Side Gallery stands as the largest outdoor mural in the world, with over 100 paintings from international and local artists - a vivid insight into the political and cultural history of Berlin.

A Holocaust Memorial spanning 19,000 square metres is made up of 2,711 concrete blocks and was built in commemoration of the 3 million Jewish Holocaust victims murdered during the Second World War.

Fancy a change of scenery? There are some memorable day trips to be had around Berlin. Tropical Islands Resort (72 kilometres away) is the largest indoor pool in Europe. Check out the spa, sauna, water slides, and a lagoon area complete with waterfalls. Tropical Islands Resort is an hour by car from Berlin.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Spreewald National Park (69 kilometres away) is a beautiful getaway just an hour and a half from Berlin by car. Enjoy the lakes and canals of the River Spree in this peaceful biosphere reserve.

On from Berlin by car, Leipzig (190 kilometres away) and Hanover (287 kilometres away) are within easy driving distance.
