Driving in Nice

US driver’s licenses are valid for rentals in France.

Nice is accessed via the A8 autoroute and the speed limit in this region is lower than in the rest of France, at 100 km/h as opposed to the usual 130 km/h. In the city center, the speed limit is 50 km/h, and on toll autoroutes it is 80 km/h.

In wet weather, speed limits on the autoroute are reduced by 10 km/h. If the visibility is less than 50 meters, the speed limit is 50 km/h on all road types.

You should stay away from bus and cycle lanes, which are sometimes physically separated from other traffic.

Street parking is free in Nice, but not widely available in the downtown area. In parts of the city there are meters which are in operation between Monday and Saturday, 9am to 8pm. These only take change and cost €1.30 an hour. It is important to note, however, that the maximum stay in these spaces is two hours, so you will need to find a long-stay parking lot or garage should you wish to spend the day exploring the city. Discover Nice and the surrounding area by car

Nice and the surrounding area are ideally explored with a hire car; the bright lights of Monaco are just 20 miles away.

Nice itself might be full of charm, but its shingle beaches are not for everyone. Luckily, less than half an hour’s drive outside the city, beaches such as Cap d’Ail and Villefranche are both sandy and sunny.

If you are driving onwards from Nice, Cannes (20 miles away), St Tropez (60 miles) and Marseille (120 miles) are all within easy reach.

Just four miles across the border, the small coastal town of Ventimiglia (Vintimille) boasts the best of Italian culture a hop away from Nice. Stock up on the best Italian produce from the weekly sea-front market (every Friday) and check out the remains of the old Roman theater, as well as the botanical gardens.
