Driving in Brisbane

In order to rent a car in Australia, you need to have a valid international driving permit as well as a valid driver’s licence issued in your country of residence. In Australia, cars drive on the left hand side of the road.

The maximum speed limit on motorways is 110 km/h, on single-carriageway roads 100 km/h, in built up areas 50 km/h and near schools 40 km/h.

There is plenty of parking in Brisbane. The city centre is comprised of the Central Traffic area, a zone where there is two hour paid parking. This is enforced from Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm, and on Saturdays from 7am to midday. You can pay with cash at meters, or via the CellOPark Australia app.

Several Australian motorways operate a toll system and at most of these you can pay using cash or debit/credit cards. Some operate under a fully electronic system however and for these you need to purchase an e-tag pass which can be bought in advance or paid for online up to three days after you have passed through the toll.

If you are traveling around Brisbane, be aware of the hazards of road travel in Australia, especially in rural or remote areas. Keep an eye on the weather before you travel, as this can dramatically affect driving conditions. Freak flooding, high winds and bushfires are not uncommon. On motorways and roads there are rest areas every 80-100 kilometres.

For driving in areas with rocky terrain, choose a four-wheel drive vehicle from our Europcar fleet.
