Discover Faro and surroundings by car
As the capital of Portugal’s spectacular Algarve region, Faro offers plenty of unforgettable attractions with the Faro Cathedral being a particular delight. Another of Algarve’s most-famous monuments is the Igreja do Carmo church and don’t miss a walk around the pre-Roman walls which surround the picturesque Old Town. A gate in the walls will lead you down to the stunning harbour where you’ll find a medley of yachts bobbing on the sea.
If you want to learn more about the Algarve and its rich culture, make your way to the Faro Municipal Museum featuring a collection of artefacts from the Roman period. From there, you could head to Museu Marítimo Almirante Ramalho Ortigão which boasts a strong maritime theme and gives a deeper insight into Faro’s once prosperous fishing industry.
With a hire car to hand you can also enjoy the best of Faro’s beaches with Praia de Faro being just a stone’s throw from Faro Airport. Illa de Amoura lagoon beach is also a great spot for snorkelling as it contains the world’s highest concentration of seahorses.
When you’re done exploring the golden coastlines and sparkling blue seas, you may then decide to travel more extensively throughout Portugal making your way up the west coast towards the hilly capital of Lisbon which is just less than 300 kilometres away. You could even head over the striking 25 de Abril Bridge toward Almada.
Driving in Faro
Before heading to Faro it’s important to know that drivers stay on the right and overtake on the left. Roads are generally well-maintained but if you venture off the beaten track or take coastal routes you may find them to be narrower and bumpier. If you do head to the 25 de Abril Bridge, be aware that it is a toll road and you will be charged to cross.
On-street parking is available but is limited and chargeable so be sure to read all signage before leaving your vehicle. Off-street parking is ideal if you plan to explore extensively by foot with the Praça e Estacionamento da Pontinha offering plenty of underground parking.
