Discover Milan and surroundings by car
Milan is renowned for its world-famous shopping districts and with a hire car you can head to local attractions particularly tailored to shopping, dining and entertainment including the Quadrilatero della Moda fashion district offering an upmarket retail experience and Galleria & Corso Vittorio Emanuele II – the world’s oldest shopping mall containing the Town House Galleria. Adjacent to this historic site you will also find Piazza Duomo, a historic square at the foot of Il Duomo – a towering cathedral which dominates the skyline of Milan.
Other unforgettable places of interest include the city’s prestigious opera house known as La Scala which also houses the Museo Teatrale alla Scala where you’ll find a collection of costumes and memorabilia from landmark performances. The Castello Sforzesco is also a fascinating place to visit as is the Leonardo da Vinci National Museum of Science and Technology which is located within a former monastery. Here, you’ll find the Leonardo da Vinci Gallery complete with working models of many of his inventions and machinery.
When you rent a car, you’ll be pleased to know that Milan is also well-placed for an onward adventure with Venice being just a short drive to the east. The historic city of Bologna is also to the south-east and with Florence being just over three hours by car, you can also explore the Tuscany region with ease. Continue south from Florence and you will arrive in Rome, Italy’s historic and utterly captivating capital city where you can pretend to be a gladiator at the Colosseum or throw a coin into the world-famous Trevi Fountain.
Driving in Milan
When driving in Milan and throughout the rest of Italy, take your time and navigate unfamiliar roads with caution. Always stay on the right hand side unless you are overtaking and follow local signs which will warn you about local speed limits and point you to top tourist attractions.
As a visitor, it’s worth keeping in mind that access to Milan’s city centre is limited by the Congestion Charge area (Area C) from Monday to Friday at varying times. To enter Area C, you must purchase a ticket in advance. For this reason, you may prefer to park on the outskirts of the city in a secured lot or a blue-lined bay and make use of the Milan Metro network. There are also tramlines to help make your journey as smooth as possible.
