Car Hire in Dusseldorf, Germany

Rent a car in Düsseldorf with Europcar

Sitting to the west of Germany, close to the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands, Düsseldorf is a striking city. Straddling the river Rhine, the imposing and modern skyline reflects its status as an international fashion and business hub. Under this flashy exterior, the city has a vibrant culture with numerous bars and theatres around the historic Altstadt district.

There is plenty to see in Düsseldorf itself, but it is also a great base for exploring more of Germany and over the borders too.

Driving in Düsseldorf

In Germany, you can rent a car with a driving licence from EU and EEA countries. International driving licences are accepted but not legally required.

Driving in Düsseldorf is relatively easy and there are plenty of parking options for cars, including street parking and multi-storey car parks. However it is generally recommended to avoid the historic centre where the streets are narrow and parking can be difficult.

In Düsseldorf itself the speed limit is 50 km/h. On motorways and dual carriageways it is 130 km/h. The speed limit on other roads is 100 km/h and is reduced further in residential areas and around schools.

It is commonly believed that German autobahns have no speed limits, however this is not true and there can be heavy fines for speeding on any road in Germany.

There are no toll charges for private cars on German roads.

Discover Düsseldorf and the surrounding area by car

Car hire in Düsseldorf gives you the flexibility to explore further afield; for example follow the Rhine and visit some of the nearby beautiful German towns.

Under an hour by car, Cologne (44 kilometres away) is close enough to easily visit from Düsseldorf. This beautiful cathedral city, with its multi-coloured buildings and cobbled squares, is a great place to explore.

On from Cologne lies the picture perfect town of Bonn (77 kilometres away), complete with the fairytale Schloss Drachenburg (Dragon Castle) watching over the city. Its historic centre is almost exclusively pedestrian, but you can park outside of this area and stroll around the city by foot.

Further afield, Brussels (205 kilometres away), Rotterdam (224 kilometres away) and Amsterdam (226 kilometres away) are all less than two and a half hours drive from Düsseldorf.

Things to see in Düsseldorf

The Medienhafen neighborhood, the once derelict harbour, is now filled with trendy bars and restaurants, and architecture from globally renowned architects such as Frank Gehry. When you have worked up an appetite, visit one of the cosy canteens serving warming traditional food and then enjoy a drink in one of the sprawling beer halls. Carlsplatz is a permanent market of cafés, takeaway outlets and fresh food stalls.

Children and adults alike will be enchanted by the Marionetten-Theater which puts on traditional marionette performances from classic fairy tales to musical operas.

Blush pink and frosted white like a cupcake, Schloss Benrath is a lovely three-winged palace designed by the French architect Nicolas de Pigage. Situated by an expansive lake, this is an exquisite example of Baroque architecture, with its formal rooms and English-style gardens. A section of the palace has been transformed into museums dedicated to natural history and horticulture. Schloss Benrath offers plenty of onsite parking and is around 30 minutes by car from Dusseldorf centre.
