Discover Orly and surroundings by car
When you pick up a car rental from Orly Airport you will be well-placed to explore this beautiful commune south of Paris renowned for its street art, markets and contemporary museums. While Orly isn’t typically known as a holiday destination, it’s a welcoming part of France to explore before venturing into the centre of Paris which is reachable in less than thirty minutes (traffic depending).
When you reach the French capital, you will find a host of attractions that’ll take your breath away from the striking Eiffel Tower to The Louvre which houses Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. Indeed, art galleries and museums are plentiful in Paris with some of the best including Musée Picasso, the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris, Carnavalet Museum and the Musée d'Orsay found within the former Gare d'Orsay – a Beaux-Arts railway station built between 1898 and 1900.
With a hire car, you’ll also have the flexibility to tour the rest of France at your leisure and with plenty to see and do your itinerary is likely to be packed to the brim. Whether it’s touring the wine regions of Bordeaux or exploring the French Riviera, you can go as and when you please.
Driving in Paris
Driving through the suburbs of Paris is usually a hassle-free experience. The roads tend to be well-signposted, well-maintained and are relatively quiet compared to central Paris. The closer you get to the capital, the more you’ll find traffic is a problem, especially during rush hour periods which fall approximately from 7-9 in the morning and 5-8 in the evening.
Always take great care when navigating unfamiliar roads and note that drivers stay on the right unless they’re overtaking. Always obey local signage and stay within the recommended speed limits. Never sound your horn in the city centre as this is illegal unless a crash is imminent.
With regards to leaving your car, on-street parking bays are available but they can be hard to find. For this reason, you may prefer to use one of the many underground parking garages which tend to open 24 hours a day for your convenience. Many tourists also park on the outskirts of the city where parking is cheaper and make use of public transport systems.
