Discover Nantes and surroundings by car
Nestled along the Loire River, Nantes has long been an important trading hub attracting not only France’s wealthiest families who settled on the Île Feydeau, but also French royalty. Amongst the top sites includes the 13th century fortress known as Château des Ducs de Bretagne which was occupied by the Dukes of Brittany before becoming a royal French residence in the 1500s.
There’s something for everyone in this lively and energetic part of Western France with must-see attractions also including Jardin des Plantes which is considered to be one of France’s most-remarkable gardens and the Nante’s Cathedral which took over 400 years to build and still dominates the city’s skyline today. Don’t miss the Passage Pommeraye shopping arcade which dates back to 1843 and how about popping into the Natural History Museum?
If you’re looking for an experience with a unique and somewhat bizarre twist, don’t leave Nantes without seeing Les Machines de l’Île – a series of animatronic and interactive animals brought to life by the artist François Delaroziere. The Grand Éléphant for example is 12 metres tall and carries 52 passengers on its back. The giant carousel will be sure to impress and there’s an indoor gallery too featuring many more sculptures as well as explanations as to how they were built.
Nantes itself will keep you busy, but if you want to head further afield, why not head north-west towards Brière Regional Natural Park or make your way up to popular north-western cities such as Quimper and Brest? Paris is less than a four hour drive away too, so go ahead and put your hire car to the test.
Driving in Nantes
Roads throughout Nantes tend to be well-maintained and signposted helping to guide you towards the top attractions. When in France drive on the right hand side of the road and take your time as you get to grips with unfamiliar road networks. Be aware of rush hour periods as you travel between French cities. These tend to fall from 7-9 in the morning and 5-7 in the evening.
On-street parking is available throughout the city, but this is limited and chargeable so always look out for pay metres. If you’re planning to stay in Nantes for more than a few hours, leaving your car in one of the many off-street parking lots makes more sense as you won’t have to worry about time.
