Discover Lille and surroundings by car
As the historic capital of Flanders, Lille is home to many points of interest with the Place du Général de Gaulle (Lille’s bustling main square) being a cultural hub lined with architecturally splendid buildings. The Old Stock Exchange is one of the square’s main talking points boasting an ornate Flemish Baroque style with the Goddess monument commemorating Lille’s resistance to the Austrian siege back in 1792.
Often considered the second most important museum in France after the Louvre, the Fine Arts Museum is also well-worth a visit. Here you’ll find an exceptional array of masterpieces by well-known artists such as Rubens, Van Dyck, Goya and Delacroix – all housed in a stunning 22,000 square metre building. From there, you could take a half hour drive to the Musée Louvre-Lens located in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region or make your way 12 kilometres north-east of Lille to Villeneuve d'Ascq – well-known for its Museums of Modern Art.
There are plenty of unforgettable attractions in Lille with the Eglise Saint-Maurice and the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de la Treille adding to the breath-taking landscape of the city – but if you want to venture further afield, Lille is well-placed for an adventure. Nestled between the lively French capital of Paris and the Belgian city of Brussels, you won’t be short of places to visit.
Driving in Lille
When driving in Lille and throughout the rest of France, please stay on the right hand side of the road and give way to drivers entering junctions from the right. Most of the roads throughout the capital are well-maintained making navigation easier with the motorways providing a hassle-free way to travel between cities – although these are often tolled.
There are two on-street parking zones in Lille: the orange and the green zones with the green zone offering a slightly longer maximum stay. Rates are variable but if you want to keep costs down you can park for free on the outskirts of the city and make use of the Park and Ride services operating throughout Lille.
