Rent a car in Frankfurt with Europcar

A powerful business and finance hub, Frankfurt welcomes thousands of visitors to its trade fairs and prestigious business district. It may have a different look and feel to other German cities, but it is not all work and no play in Frankfurt. The Old City has a rustic charm, with its gingerbread-like buildings, squares filled with cafés, and a collection of museums that rival Berlin

Whether visiting for business or pleasure, renting a car in Frankfurt allows you to easily explore the city and its surroundings. With both short- and long-term rentals available, Europcar can provide the transport for your travel needs.

The Europcar rental experience in Frankfurt

Europcar Frankfurt has a number of stations for convenient car rental pick-up. Frankfurt Airport (one of the largest in Europe) has three branches, one of which is open 24/7. There is also a branch at the main railway station, useful if you are arriving by train into Frankfurt.

The Renault Clio Kombi, Volkswagen Golf or Audi A1 are popular options for car rental in Frankfurt, ideal for small groups or business trips. Families and bigger groups can choose the Skoda Superb Combi, the Volkswagen Touran, or other similar larger models.

Van rental in Frankfurt, for business or personal transport, is available in a range of medium and large sizes to suit your requirements.

Driving in Frankfurt

Frankfurt is located close to key autobahns (federal highways), making it easy to access by car. On those sections of autobahn where a limit applies, and on highways, it is 130 km/h. The speed limit on other roads is 100 km/h and is reduced further in residential areas and around schools.

Many stretches of autobahn have no speed limit, though heavy fines apply for dangerous driving on any road in Germany.

On-street parking in the centre of Frankfurt is limited, and parking lots are better options, with more space and unlimited time. Cheaper rates apply during the evenings and weekends.

On German roads there are no toll charges for private cars.

Discover Frankfurt and the surrounding area by car

When you have seen all that the city has to offer, from the old opera house, St. Bartholomew's Cathedral, and the Museum of Modern Art, to the Goethe House and Museum and the 32-acre zoo, there is more to see further afield in the Rhine region.

Heading south from Frankfurt, explore the UNESCO-protected Rhine Valley. Extending from Koblenz to Mannheim (50 miles away), this area is best seen by car so you can choose where you stop for breathtaking views of the river and to explore the historic gems of the region.

One hour or 55 miles south of Frankfurt is Heidelberg, hailed as one of the most romantic cities in Europe thanks to its riverside location and ancient ruins. Heidelberg Castle and the University, dating back to 1386, are popular attractions worth a visit.

Further south are Baden-Baden (110 miles away) and the stunning Black Forest.

Things to see in Frankfurt

Frankfurt is a city of two faces. A hub of tall skyscrapers overlooking the Rhine, it is the site of many global and European corporate headquarters. On the other hand, there is an old-world charm to the city’s quaint buildings and tranquil parks. Head to the Römerberg square to enjoy the plethora of outdoor cafés and bars with a medieval backdrop. And if you are visiting in December, don’t miss the Christmas market.

The muted pink cathedral, the Kaiserdom, enjoys a prestigious history and has had several rebuilds. The Senckenberg natural history museum features changing exhibits, and entrance is free to visitors from cities twinned with Frankfurt, including Philadelphia and Toronto.

Palm Garden, a 54-acre park, is the largest botanical garden in Germany, an urban paradise in the heart of Frankfurt. There are numerous areas to explore, including a rockery with a waterfall, cactus garden, underwater tropical garden, tropicarium and sub-Antarctic house - each one plunging you into a new and evocative environment. There is enough here to occupy the whole family for hours, from tours and lectures to a playground, mini-golf course and boating on the lake.
