Discover Funchal and surroundings by car
As the lively capital of Portugal’s beautiful Madeira archipelago, Funchal is a fascinating and historic place to explore by car. With striking beaches and cloud-tipped mountains framing the south coast and quaint houses nestled on the slopes of steep hills, Funchal is a visual delight that will have you captivated from the word go.
While you might simply decide to drive and see where the roads take you, it’s worth bearing in mind the following attractions which will make your trip that bit more special. Topping the list are some of Funchal’s most-popular beaches which include Praia de Sao Tiago located by the famous yellow Forte Sao Tiago. Barreirinha beach complex offers fantastic swimming conditions particularly during the summer months and the Lido pool complex is well-known for its long promenade.
If you want a break from sea and sand, you’ll find an array of other places of interest with the Botanical Garden being easily accessible by cable car – which is itself one of Madeira’s most-loved attractions. Learning more about the local area will also enrich your visit too, so how about passing by the Madeira Story Centre or the Sacred Art Museum housed in a building which dates back to 1600? You could even visit the former residence of Portuguese navigator João Gonçalves Zarco who helped discover Madeira back in 1419.
Of course, with a hire car you’re free to explore further afield too. Following Madeira’s coastline will give way to many visual treats including stunning parishes such as Madalena do Mar.
Driving in Funchal
Throughout Madeira you should drive on the right hand side of the road and overtake on the left. In recent years, the roads have been significantly improved with a dual carriageway now making it easier and safer to explore. A series of highly engineered tunnels will also take you through towering mountain ranges that were once rather scary to navigate.
That said; some of the original nail-biting cliff roads still exist, so if you head off the beaten track please drive slowly and carefully. Be aware of narrow pathways and watch out for traffic coming in the other direction.
In Madeira you will find that many locals park wherever they find a space. Cars can be towed, however, so it’s worth making your way to a designated parking lot. There are several large car parks around Funchal with one being close to the cable car terminal.
