Discover Ponta Delgada and surroundings by car
Nestled on the south coast of São Miguel – the largest of nine islands in the Atlantic Ocean around 1,300 kilometres west of Portugal’s mainland – Ponta Delgada is wonderfully charming with the harbour front being a particular highlight. Here, you’ll find a striking promenade lined with notable landmarks from the Azores Military Museum and the striking 18th-century city gates to the handsome Igreja São Sebastião which has been carefully crafted from the black basalt stone that characterizes all public buildings in the Azores.
The Convent and Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Esperança is also a sight to behold and don’t miss the fascinating Carlos Machado Museum which offers a deeper insight into the customs and traditions of island life. The museum is housed in the former 16th-century monastery of Santo André and is suitable for both adults and youngsters thanks to its great range of antique toys and trinkets from the early 20th century.
If you’d like to do something a little different, a whale watching tour can be booked from the marina. This is undoubtedly one of the best things to do when you’re in Ponta Delgada and is sure to leave you with lasting memories.
Driving in Ponta Delgada
As an autonomous region of Portugal, the same traffic laws you'll encounter in the city of Lisbon apply in Ponta Delgada which means that you should stay on the right hand side of the road unless you are overtaking. Due to the network of historic roads, many routes are extremely narrow so take extra care when navigating unfamiliar routes. When visiting the area, also note that on the spot speeding fines are common, so never go faster than the local signage allows.
With regards to parking, always park in a marked bay and avoid leaving your car in a random place – even if your see locals doing so. Parking can be chargeable, so be sure to make use of local metres and read the local parking signs to see how long you can stay.
