Discover Brindisi and surroundings by car
Brindisi is an enchanting city in the Apulia region of Italy, just off the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Located in the heel of Italy’s boot, Brindisi is oozing with authentic Italian charm and while it might often be overshadowed by popular cities such as Rome, there’s an abundance to discover here.
When you hire a vehicle from Europcar Brindisi Airport, you’ll be well-placed to explore the local area in style with top attractions including the harbour which is packed with sailing boats and lined by tempting ice-cream parlours known as gelaterias. You’re also sure to spot the Monument to Italian Sailors which stands at an impressive 54-metres high and provides great views across the waterfront.
Whether you’re travelling around Brindisi by day or night, the Brindisi Cathedral won’t disappoint. Having been originally erected in the 12th century, it was substantially remodelled in 1743 following an earthquake, but it is still visually pleasing and is illuminated by lights after dark. The markets are also a local delight and you’ll find a treasure trove of boutique shops dotted throughout the city.
Fancy a trip to the beach? Then head to the Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve on Italy’s Puglia coast – an attractive escape from some of the more overdeveloped beach resorts.
As well as being one of Italy’s finest gems, Brindisi is also the perfect hub to visit other destinations such as Ostuni which is around 40 kilometres north-west of the city. Often referred to as the White City, because of its white-washed walls and buildings throughout, Ostuni offers spectacular views across the ocean and is a great spot for a day trip.
If you head south of Brindisi, you’ll also come across the historic city of Lecce, which draws many similarities to Florence. The town is a history-lover’s dream with highlights including a 2nd century Roman amphitheatre still in use today and a scattering of quaint churches.
Driving in Brindisi
When you hire a vehicle in Italy, be sure to drive on the right hand side of the road and overtake on the left. Italian roads are usually well signposted with many top locations being easy to navigate to.
In the Old Town, parking in bays with white lines is free of charge. Parking in bays with blue lines, however, needs to be paid for so follow these rules to avoid being fined. There are many unlimited car parks in the centre making parking up a simple process.
One thing to keep in mind when in Brindisi is that the historic centre is a ZTL zone which means that driving and parking are authorised to permit holders only.
