Discover Paris and surroundings by car

If you’re eager to explore the very best of Paris, renting a car makes perfect sense. Our Paris Place d’Italie station is just a stone’s throw from major places of interested including the creepy Catacombs of Paris which contain the skeletons of six million Parisians that were moved underground when the city’s cemeteries started to run out of space. This attraction is just a six minute drive away (depending on traffic) and is certainly an interesting way to start your trip.

As Place d’Italie is within fifteen minutes of the city centre, you can also enjoy a tour of all local sites from The Louvre (where you can see Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa), to the towering and incredibly striking Notre-Dame Cathedral. How about also taking a relaxing drive along the River Seine towards The Docks – City of Fashion and Design before sussing out Luxembourg Gardens – a sensational 17th century park renowned for stunning flowers and statues?

With a hire car, you may also want to venture further afield and explore the rest of Northern France with Normandy’s capital Rouen being a particular highlight thanks to it cobblestoned pedestrianized centre and medieval half-timbered houses. To the south-west of Paris you’ll find the famous wine district of Bordeaux and to the south-east Geneva and Lyon.

Driving in Paris

Driving through the suburbs of Paris is usually a hassle-free experience. The roads tend to be well-signposted, well-maintained and are relatively quiet compared to central Paris. The closer you get to the capital, however, the more you’ll find traffic is a problem – especially during rush hour periods which fall approximately from 7-9 in the morning and 5-8 in the evening.

Always take great care when navigating unfamiliar roads and note that drivers stay on the right unless they’re overtaking. Be sure to obey local signage and stay within the recommended speed limits. Never sound your horn in the city centre as this is illegal unless a crash is imminent.

With regards to leaving your car, on-street parking bays are available but they can be hard to find. For this reason, you may prefer to use one of the many underground parking garages which usually open 24 hours a day for your convenience. Many tourists also park on the outskirts of the city where parking is cheaper and make use of public transport systems.
