Discover Paris and surroundings by car
When you pick up a car rental from our convenient and easy-to-find station at Paris Gare St Lazare, you’ll be well-placed to explore some of the most-loved attractions in the capital – and some of the lesser-known places of interest. After you’ve climbed the Eiffel Tower, for instance, why not see it from the Montparnasse Tower? If you’ve seen the Mona Lisa at The Louvre, how about heading to the National Museum of Natural History or the Musée du Quai Branly which celebrates the indigenous art and cultures of Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas?
What’s more, if you’ve wandered through the Luxembourg Gardens how about a walk along the Promenade Plantee? You could even venture off the beaten track to the creepy tunnels of the catacombs which contains the skeletons of around six million Parisians which were moved underground when the city’s cemeteries ran out of space in the 1780s.
With a hire car to hand, you can also head out of the city and tour France more extensively. Head west to Brest, south-east to the famous wine regions of Bordeaux and perhaps head to the south-eastern corner of France and discover the Côte d'Azur which includes the state of Monaco.
Driving in Paris
When in Paris, you’ll be eager to explore, but be sure to plan your route carefully and to take your time navigating unfamiliar routes. Always stick to the speed limits and obey local signage which will often guide you in the direction of popular tourist attractions.
Traffic congestion can be a problem in central Paris particularly during rush hour periods which typically fall between 7-9 in the morning and 5-8 in the evening. If you’re new to the area, please note that it is illegal to sound your horn in Paris unless a crash is imminent.
With regards to parking, on-street parking bays are available but they can be hard to find. For this reason, you may prefer to use one of the many underground parking garages which tend to open 24 hours a day for your convenience. Many tourists also park on the outskirts of the city where parking is cheaper and make use of public transport systems.
