Discover Nice and surroundings by car

As the French Riviera’s largest city, Nice is one of the south coast’s most glamorous and beautiful locations well-known for its striking pebble beaches and opulent 19th century mansions. It’s the ideal place to explore by car with top attractions including the Promenade des Anglais – a remarkable grand walkway offering exquisite views across the Mediterranean. Frequented by joggers and walkers all year round, the promenade also hosts the February parade which is an integral part of the city life.

While Nice is home to broad boulevards and expansive squares with Place Masséna being a particular highlight, you’ll find a medley of narrow alleyways lined with boutique shops, houses and restaurants in Vieille Ville – the oldest part of the city. Dominated by the Colline du Château to the east, this historic hub is a great place for a wander around offering some of the best crepes in the region.

From Vieille Ville, you may even want to climb up to Parc de la Colline du Château which provides spectacular vistas across the French Riviera. Look out for a selection of renowned landmarks such as Nice Cathedral which dates back to the 17th century.

With a hire car, you’ll also have the chance to explore the Côte d'Azur more extensively with the glamorous city-state of Monaco being well-worth a visit. How about also taking a leisurely drive to the beach resort town of Antibes before making your way to Cannes, home of the Cannes Film Festival? The high-end resort of Saint-Tropez is also within easy reach giving you plenty of options for a road trip.

Driving in Nice

When driving in Nice, stay on the right hand side of the road unless you are overtaking. Traffic can become busy, especially during rush hour periods, so try to avoid travelling between 7-9 in the morning and 5-7 in the evening if possible. When navigating the city centre, beware of one-way streets, bus-only lanes, bicycles and tram lines. As stoplights are lower than you may expect, these can also be easily missed, so it’s important to stay extra vigilant when driving.

While you’ll find metered parking across the city, almost all parking lots allow you to stay an hour for free. There are also five ParcAzur lots located at various points along the tramway route, where you can leave your car for free from morning until night as long as you pay for a round-trip on the tramway.
