Discover Bastia and surroundings by car
When you look at a map of Corsica, you’ll see a 40 kilometre peninsula at the north of the island which sticks out. This is Cap Corse and Bastia is a stunning port city found at the base of this peninsula. There’s plenty to see and do here and with a hire care from Europcar you’ll be well-placed to explore the very best attractions.
If you’re new to the area, one of the best places to head is the old town locally referred to as Terra Vecchia. Here, you can stroll around the palm-filled Place Saint-Nicolas before walking around to see the docked ships in the port or sampling some delicious French cuisine at one of the many eateries.
During a leisurely afternoon, you could also get lost amid the network of cobbled streets as you search for the 15th century Cathedral Ste-Marie or head to the Musée de Bastia which houses the notorious French submarine, Casablanca.
Bastia is also well-located for a road trip further afield. With fuel in the tank and a camera at hand, why not enjoy a coastal ride stopping at top locations such as Calvi Beach – a sweeping bay of powdered white sand – or Arinella Beach where you can snorkel the day away? How about a spot of camping in Monte Cinto or head to the Regional Natural Park of Corsica for a day of hiking?
Driving in Bastia
With its stunning scenery and picturesque villages, Corsica is the ideal place for a road trip with people throughout France driving on the right and overtaking on the left. Roads are generally in good condition, but beware of mountainous routes which can be narrow and windy.
Parking can be difficult around the port of Bastia, with on-street parking being easier to find in the evening. There are underground parking lots, however, with one being near the train station and one being underneath Place Saint-Nicolas.
