Discover Biarritz and surroundings by car
A haven for the rich and famous back in the nineties, Biarritz has long been appreciated for its exquisite coastlines. So, with this in mind, why not jump into your hire car and head to some of the best beaches with Le Grande Plage being close to the city centre? While those with small children may enjoy a trip to the rocky cove of Plage du Port Vieux, quieter beaches such as Plage de Milady are ideal for anyone wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
Want to try your hand at surfboarding? Then the high waves of Marbella Beach are not to be missed or make your way to Plage Côte des Basques which is also a surfer’s paradise.
Aside from building sandcastles and splashing in the waves, how about a tour of the local area with a trip to the Rocher de la Vierge (Virgin of the Rock) being one of Biarritz’ most dramatic and visually impressive sites? Here, you’ll find a great rock protruding into the ocean with a statue of the Virgin Mary looking out toward the sea. Another emblem of this historic sea town is the Biarritz lighthouse which stands at the tip of the Pointe Saint-Martin.
Biarritz’s famous landmarks also include a selection of museums with the Chocolate Museum, the Oriental Art Museum and the Historical Museum of Biarritz being amongst the most popular.
If you’re in France for an extended period of time, Biarritz is also well-placed for a road trip to other well-known French cities such as Bordeaux which can be reached by car in just over two hours. You may also want to pass through the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park – a protected pine forest, ideal for hiking, camping and canoeing.
Driving in Biarritz
In Biarritz and throughout the rest of France, people drive on the right hand side of the road and overtake on the left. Please keep this firmly in mind and travel carefully if you’re not used to these rules. Driving in the city can be busy; however, roads tend to be well-marked with signs pointing you to many of the top landmarks.
Street parking in Biarritz is limited but with many parking lots available at key locations such as the Grande Plage and Gare du Midi, you shouldn’t have a problem leaving your car.
