Discover Madrid and surroundings by car

What better way to explore Spain’s fascinating and culturally rich capital than by car? With access to four wheels you can hop from site to site, checking out some of the best attractions along the way.

Unforgettable places of interest include the Prado – one of the best and most popular art museums in the world housing must-see works such as Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights and David with Head of Goliath by Caravaggio. History lovers are also sure to enjoy the National Archaeological Museum which will take you on an intriguing journey through Spain’s rich history.

If you want to see the largest palace in Western Europe, don’t miss the Royal Palace which was built in the mid-1700s for King Philip V. Puerta del Sol is a grand square worth seeing too and then there’s Gran Vía – a bustling avenue full of shops, cafes, restaurants, boutique stalls, nightclubs, theatres and more. Feeling peckish after a day of sightseeing? Then Mercado San Miguel is the ideal place to rest and sample some of the best cuisine Spain has to offer. This art nouveau marketplace dates back to 1916 and is Europe’s largest municipal market with 200 stalls.

As Madrid is centrally located, it’s within easy reach of many other wonderful Spanish cities with Malaga to the south and Valencia to the east. Head north for the beautiful port city of Bilbao and how about heading south-west towards Seville and the Andalusia region?

Driving in Madrid

Like many countries throughout Europe, drivers stay on the right hand side of the road unless they are overtaking. Roads are generally well-maintained throughout Madrid with signs leading the way to many top attractions. There is a lot of traffic within the city centre however, so you may prefer to park up on the outskirts of the city and make use of the Metro service.

It’s also worth knowing that Spain’s road network is divided up into carreteras nacionales (toll-free national roads), autovías (toll-free highway) and autopistas (toll freeways), so bear this in mind as you plan your journey. Speed limits are strictly enforced with the help of speed cameras throughout Madrid and there has been a crackdown on drink driving in recent years with Spanish police issuing heavy fines.

With regards to parking, you can leave your vehicle in spaces with blue or green road markings. It is illegal to park in places where there are yellow markings, or where No Parking (Prohibido estacionar) signs are displayed.

Discover Spain’s vibrant capital

With some of the best museums in Europe and a wealth of historical sites and bustling shopping avenues, Madrid is a Spanish gem. Tour the best attractions at your leisure with a hire car from Europcar Madrid Airport Terminal 1 and discover the very best of this vibrant capital.

Travel far and wide

While there’s plenty to see and do in Madrid, a hire car will give you the freedom and flexibility to tour Spain more extensively. Head south for the Costa del Sol or make your way north to the picturesque port city of Bilbao. You could even go west and pop over the border into Portugal
