As a beautiful university city renowned for its unique art and fashion scene, Dusseldorf is home to a wealth of exciting attractions such as the North Rhine-Westphalia Art Collection which is spread across three locations across Dusseldorf. The largest of these collections, K20, is housed in Grabbeplatz – an ultra-modern building complete with a beautiful granite façade
Those interested in Dusseldorf’s rich culture are also sure to appreciate the Museum of Art – which houses artwork dating from the 3rd century BC to the present day – as well as the variety of exquisitely preserved buildings dotted around the city. The Church of St. Suitbertus found in Kaiserswerth is particularly delightful and then there’s Schloss Benrath, an impressive Baroque Palace located around 10 kilometres from the city centre.
Fancy a spot of retail therapy? Then Dusseldorf won’t disappoint either with the main shopping street Königsallee featuring everything from high-end boutiques to luxury arcades. From there, you could make your way to the Old Town or head to Nordpark’s Japanese Garden.
If you want to be close to the water’s edge, Dusseldorf’s Rhine Embankment Promenade is the ideal place for a stroll lined with restaurants, bars and galleries. You could even take a boat ride.
With a hire car, you’ll also be well-placed to head out of the city to other places of interest such as Cologne which is just a 30-minute drive south or Bonn which is well-known for the central Beethoven House. Frankfurt is easily accessible by car too and if you want to travel extensively throughout Germany you can do so at your leisure.
Throughout Germany, you must drive on the right-hand side of the road and overtake on the left. The roads throughout Dusseldorf are well-maintained and considerably less congested than more populous cities such as Berlin. That said; take care around the Old Town as some of the ancient infrastructure still remains making navigating these parts slightly trickier. Please also be aware that a large part of Dusseldorf is a low emissions zone welcoming eco-friendly vehicles only.
Parking throughout the city tends to be chargeable but unlimited, although charges can be fairly high. If you want to keep costs down, free parking is available at the many Park and Ride stops on the outskirts of the city.
