When will my deposit be released?

The security deposit is a temporary pre-authorisation, or "hold," on your payment card. We aim to initiate the release as quickly as possible, but the final timing is managed by your bank.


1. The Standard Release Process (Credit Cards)

When you return the vehicle and there are no additional charges (such as fuel, tolls, or damage), Europcar will request the immediate release of the pre-authorisation within 24 hours.

Most card issuers take 3 to 10 business days to process the request.


Maximum Hold Time

In rare cases, some holds may remain for as long as 30 days from the date of pick-up, depending on your bank's policy.


Important Note: It is not a transaction! Since the deposit is a pre-authorisation hold and not an actual charge, you will not receive a separate bank notification or see a "refund" transaction. The pending amount for the deposit will simply disappear from your statement.


If you do not see the hold released after 10 business days, please contact your bank directly.


2. Maestro Card Deposit Process (Debit)

In countries where Maestro Cards are accepted for the deposit, the process is different because the amount is debited from your account at pick-up.

  • Europcar Action: We will request the refund of your deposit within 24 hours of vehicle return.
  • Bank Processing Time: As with credit cards, it typically takes 3 to 10 business days for the refund to be processed and appear on your account, depending on your bank.

3. If the Released Amount is Less Than the Deposit

If the amount released or refunded is less than the original deposit, it is because additional charges have been deducted.

  • Common Deductions Include: Missing fuel, unpaid tolls, damage, or charges detailed in the Terms & Conditions.
  • Details: You will find a full breakdown of these deductions in your final invoice, which will be sent via email or available for download from our website.

Tip for a Smooth Return

To ensure the full deposit is released without delay, please confirm the following before return:

  • The fuel tank is filled (if required by your agreement).
  • All tolls are settled (if applicable).
  • The vehicle is returned on time and in the same good condition as pick-up.
