How Do Tolls and Congestion Charges Work With My Rental?
Whether you're traveling within the UK or heading abroad, it’s good to know how tolls, congestion zones, and emission charges might affect your journey. We’re here to make it simple!
In the UK: Congestion & Emission Zones:
- London Congestion Charge & Oxford Zero Emission Zone : these charges may apply depending on where and when you’re driving. If your rental begins in a zone where these charges apply, the cost will be added to your rental, as required by local regulations.
- Clean Air Zone (CAZ) and Low Emission Zone (LEZ): all Europcar vehicles meet the required environmental standards, so you won’t need to pay extra for driving in most CAZ or LEZ areas. To check which cities have these zones, visit our CAZ & LEZ Information Page.
Traveling in Europe: What to Expect
If you're driving outside the UK, here’s what to keep in mind: Tolls and congestion charges are the driver’s responsibility unless otherwise stated in your rental agreement. Some countries offer convenience services via toll badges or transponders:
- Portugal: Vehicles picked up at Portuguese branches include a Via Verde toll device, and toll usage is managed automatically. Charges will be added to your rental, along with a small service fee.
- Ireland (Dublin’s M50 Motorway): The M50 uses a barrier-free toll system. Europcar partners with eFlow to make payment easy. The toll and admin fee are automatically added to your invoice.
- Austria & Switzerland: Toll stickers (vignettes) are not included in your rental. If required, you'll need to purchase them separately before using toll roads.
