Discover Menorca and surroundings by car
While Menorca is typically more low-key than its party-centric neighbours Majorca and Ibiza, there’s still plenty to do here with the golden coastline being a particular pull for tourists and locals alike. There are nearly 700 square kilometres of beach on the island and 216 kilometres of coastline with Cala Turqueta and Cala Macarella to the south and Cala Pregonda, Cala Cavallería and Cala del Pilar to the north.
One of the great things about Menorca is that it is almost completely unspoilt with the scenery being a particular talking point for visitors. With access to four wheels you can see what the fuss is all about with a trip to hot spots including Grau Albufera Natural Park (a marsh on the east coast home to many different bird species) being particularly worth your time.
While on the island, be sure to also explore the historic centre of Mahón taking in top sites such as the huge 19th century fortress at the mouth of Mahón’s vast harbour. Fortalesa De La Mola is extremely well preserved and features everything from tunnels and cannons to an underground art gallery. What’s more, if you’re an early riser, Es Castell is the place to start the day. As the most easterly town in Menorca, it’s the first place in the whole of Spain to see the sun each morning.
Driving in Menorca
Hiring a car is one of the best ways to explore the island but there are a few basic rules to follow. Firstly, stay on the right hand side of the road unless you are overtaking. Drive carefully when navigating a new area and follow local signage to be sure you don’t break local laws. If you want to have a drink on holiday, always assign a designated driver to take you home as drink driving is strictly forbidden in Menorca and could put your safety at risk.
With regards to leaving your car, some parking zones have metres and some are free, so it’s a case of sussing out the area and using common sense. Parking is permitted in blue lined zones but you must not park in yellow lined zones or handicapped spaces unless you have permission.
