Stevenage is a mainly new town built after the Second World War. It is in Hertfordshire and a short drive from London. It was one of the first towns to have a pedestrianised town centre. It is a good shopping destination and is also close to pleasant countryside and stately homes.

Knebworth House, the home of the Lytton family is a handsome property and known particularly for major rock concerts in its grounds. The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd have both performed here. The house was used in various films including Tim Burton’s Batman. You can park your Europcar car or van and wander through the park which has formal gardens as well as herds of red deer.

Fairlands Valley Park is another green oasis. It has a water activity centre based around a large lake where you can learn sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, or rowing.

Hampson Park to the north-east of the town has a tree trail identifying different species. It also has a large children’s park with a café with delicious homemade cakes.

For lovers of history, St. Alban’s is just a short drive away. It has remains from the Roman city of Verulamium in an archaeological park, as well as a beautiful cathedral and a Medieval clock tower.

The attractive market town of Hitchin could also make a pleasant day out with its pretty, cobbled streets and interesting architecture. In summer you can also enjoy a visit to Cadwell Farm which has massive lavender fields, wildflower meadows and sunflowers. The farm has a shop that sells plants and essential oils.
