Southampton Airport lies four miles north-east of the city and handles around 1.8 million passengers a year. It is the 18th busiest airport in the UK and serves primarily domestic and short haul routes.
Southampton Airport car hire
The largest city in Hampshire, Southampton is a major port town. It houses the SeaCity Museum, an art gallery and the Mayflower Theatre – the largest in the South outside London. However, by hiring a car at the airport, you can more easily head out and explore other nearby areas.
Most obviously, Southampton lies right next to the New Forest National Park. It’s easy enough to drive over and then explore the area by bike, on horseback or simply on foot. You could also try canoeing, sailing or windsurfing on the coastal or inland waters. And if you have your fill of nature, you’ll also find the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu.
Drive east from Southampton Airport and you will enter the South Downs National Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With rolling hills and bustling market towns, there is plenty to see and do from the chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters to the South Downs Way, a long distance footpath which stretches from Winchester to Eastbourne.
A little further along the coast, you may fancy taking your hire car to Brighton, while in the opposite direction you’ll find the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that spans 95 miles of coastline.
