Newcastle International Airport is the 10th busiest in the UK, handling over 4.5 million passengers a year. Opened in 1935, the airport mainly serves Newcastle, Tyneside, Northumberland and Wearside, but as the second-largest airport in the North of England, many visitors are heading to Yorkshire, Cumbria or further afield too.
Newcastle Airport car hire
The fact that Newcastle Airport serves such a wide area means car rental is common, whether hourly hire for those flying in for just one day, or daily hire for tourists and longer-term business travellers.
Newcastle, the city on the north bank of the Tyne, and Gateshead, the city on the south bank, together form a large and vibrant urban area. But if the city itself has much to offer, it’s well worth driving out to explore nearby areas as well.
Begun in 122 AD during the reign of the emperor from which it takes its name, Hadrian’s Wall was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. It is the most popular tourist attraction in the North and you can follow the course of the wall on foot along the adjacent Hadrian's Wall Path.
The wall also lies alongside Northumberland National Park. This and the nearby Kielder Water and Forest Park are great spots for walking and cycling. You could also drive down to Durham to take in its cobbled streets and cathedral, or up to Alnwick Castle, a recurring backdrop for film and TV productions as diverse as Harry Potter and Blackadder.
Europcar can also offer one-way car hire should you wish to pick up a car at Newcastle Airport and drop it off elsewhere.
