Discover Majorca and surroundings by car

With access to four wheels, you’ll be able to discover the very best of this stunning island with the bustling capital of Palma being a must-see for any visitor. Highlights of the area include the Palma Cathedral – a gothic place of worship on the seafront just a stone’s throw from Ca'n Pere Antoni beach – and Bellver Castle which offers spectacular 360-degree panoramic views across the city.

While you’re in the area, be sure to also pass by the fascinating Arab Baths which miraculously survived demolition, as well as the Royal Palace of La Almudaina. Love art? Then Palma is also home to the Baluard Museu d’Art Modern i Contemporani where you’ll find an impressive collection of contemporary exhibitions.

When you pick up a rental from Mallorca Palma Airport, you’ll also have the freedom to tour more extensively with a trip to Porto Cristo being well worth your time. Here, you’ll find the Dragon Caves where you can see alien-like stalactites and stalagmites and enjoy a relaxing boat ride on an underground lake. If you’re in the mood for an adventure, you could also take a short drive north towards La Colonia de Sant Jordi where you can set sail for the Cabrera National Park.

With fuel in the tank and a camera to hand, how about heading into the rocky Serra de Tramuntana mountains which have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to their sheer beauty?

Driving in Majorca

Hiring a car is one of the best ways to explore the island but there are a few basic rules to follow. Firstly, stay on the right hand side of the road unless you are overtaking. Drive carefully when navigating a new area and be careful if you head up the mountains as roads can become narrow and bumpy. Watch out for oncoming traffic as it can be difficult for two vehicles to pass. What’s more, follow local signage and don’t break the speed limit.

With regards to leaving your car, some parking zones have metres and some are free, so it’s a case of sussing out the area and using common sense. Parking is permitted in blue lined zones but you must not park in yellow lined zones or handicapped spaces unless you have permission.
