Discover Lisbon and surroundings by car
Set over a series of picturesque hills overlooking the River Tagus, Lisbon is undoubtedly one of Europe’s most beautiful cities – and what way to explore in style than with a hire car? Drive away from Lisbon Airport and you’ll be geared up to explore some of the city’s most-loved attractions including St George’s Castle which towers over the old quarter of Lisbon known as Alfama.
Another highlight for any sightseer visiting Lisbon has to be the 6th-century Jerónimos Monastery which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical importance and its sheer splendour. Built to honour Vasco da Gama's 1498 voyage to India and therefore dating back to the early 1500s, this wonderfully enchanting building is a symbol of discovery.
The Belém Tower is also another Lisbon wonder dating back to 1515 and then there’s Lisbon’s fortified Romanesque cathedral which decorates the city’s skyline.
As well as century-old buildings, Lisbon does have some modern architecture with the futuristic Lisbon Oceanarium contrasting wonderfully with the more archaic surroundings. The Elevador de Santa Justa – a unique elevator offering incredible city views also stands out from the crowd and is an impressive way to see the city from a great height.
A stroll around Lisbon’s Harbour is sure to make your stay complete and with a hire vehicle from Europcar you can even venture over the impressive 25 de Abril Bridge into Almada. Here you’ll find landmarks such as the impressive Cristo Rei statue which can be seen from the crossing.
Driving in Lisbon
Throughout Lisbon and the rest of Portugal, you must drive on the right hand side of the road and overtake on the left. The region is very popular, so be sure to take extra care as you navigate unfamiliar routes. As you drive over the impressive 25 de Abril Bridge, pay attention to traffic as well as admiring the views. Be aware that this is a toll road and cars will be charged €1.45.
As Lisbon is an old city with a network of narrow streets, parking can be difficult – especially in the districts of Baixa, Chiado and Alfama. With this in mind, you are advised to park in one of the underground (Estacionamento Subterraneo) car parks.
