Discover Auckland and surroundings by car
One of the great things about Auckland is that it is wonderfully diverse. While one minute you may be crossing the Auckland Harbour Bridge overlooking the spectacular Waitematā Harbour, the next you might be shooting up the elevator of the Sky Tower which offers views of up to 80 kilometres on a clear day.
From main tourist sites such as Auckland Zoo, New Zealand’s Maritime Museum, Museum of Transport and Technology, Auckland Art Gallery and Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium, you could also hop behind the wheel and explore the incredibly interesting landscape which has been dramatically shaped by over 48 volcanic cones – Mount Eden being Auckland’s tallest volcano.
As for the beaches – they all have their own character and charm with the tranquil, sandy and family-friendly shores of the east coast giving way to the rockier, choppier west coast which stands out due to its stretches of black volcanic sand. You could even wave goodbye to the coast and head for a greener, more rural setting with both Riverhead Forest and Coopers Creek Vineyard being just a short drive from the city centre.
Driving in Auckland
In Auckland and throughout the rest of New Zealand, drivers stay on the left and overtake on the right. The city centre is often busy, but with ample parking you can leave your car close to major attractions and explore by foot.
On-street pay and display parking solutions are popular or you may prefer to leave your car in one of the many enclosed or open-air car parks dotted throughout the city. Remember to check signage and follow all instructions to avoid unnecessary fines. Monthly lease parking is available if you are staying in Auckland for a long period of time.
