Discover Padova and surroundings by car

As one of the oldest established cities in Northern Italy Padova – often referred to as Padua – has enjoyed some form of settlement since 1183BC and is therefore a fascinating place to explore. One of the most popular attractions in the area has to be the Basilica di Sant’Antonio which stands tall in the centre of the Old Town. Constructed during the 1200s, this impressive structure features a wide range of architectural styles and is listed as one of the international shrines of the Holy See.

Bustling squares lined with bars, restaurants and boutique stalls are characteristic of Italy’s cities with Piazza dei Signori being one of the liveliest gathering points in Padova. Here, you’ll find the famous Torre Dell’Orologio (Clock Tower) and the beautiful Marciana column, as well as regular markets which attract tourists and locals alike.

While you’re in the area, be sure to also pass by Padua Duomo with its blue and red patterned marble floor and the Cappella degli Scrovegni – a sensationally picturesque church well-known for its colourful religious depictions with almost all available wall space being covered with artwork.

If you fancy heading further afield, Padova is also well-placed for a road trip with the quirky waterways and gondolas of Venice being just a short drive to the east and Milan to the west. Head south and you’ll also find the visually impressive cities of Bologna and Florence which are sure to take your breath away.

When driving in Italy, always stay on the right hand side of the road unless you are overtaking. Roads tend to be well-maintained and signposted making navigation relatively straightforward. That said; driving throughout Padova can be challenging thanks to the network of narrow roads and pedestrian-only zones. The centre of Padova is a ZTL zone which means access to this area is restricted only to permit holders.

On-street parking is indicated by blue lines. Please follow local signage to ensure you don’t overstay. Unlimited parking is set to off-street car parks in the city with rates ranging from €2.00-4.00 per hour. Lower rates usually apply during the evening.
