Driving in Lamezia Terme
When driving in Italy, the speed limit is a maximum of 130 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h on main roads and 90 km/h on secondary roads. In urban areas, the speed varies between 50 and 70 km/h. Around schools and highly populated areas the limit may be lower.
Be aware that the speed limit varies in wet weather conditions. If it is raining or hard to see, the speed limit on motorways and main roads is reduced by 10 km/h.
Long and short stay parking is available at Lamezia Terme Airport. Parking spaces cannot be reserved beforehand. Payment is on exit with either cash or credit/debit card.
There are some paid multi-storey car parks in the town itself; otherwise on-street parking spaces are indicated by blue markings or road signs.
Across Italy, most motorways have tolls which can be paid either with cash or credit/debit card when you reach them.
Keep an eye on your fuel level while you travel, especially as many petrol stations are not open on Sundays, and be aware that not all petrol stations accept debit/credit cards so it is sensible to carry some cash.
Discover Lamezia Terme and its surroundings by car
Situated in the Calabria region, Lamezia Terme is a quaint collection of houses with historic monuments scattered across its centre. Must-sees include the Bastion of Malta, the Norman-Swabian castle which sits above the San Teodoro district, and the botanical gardens.
On from Lamezia Terme you can explore more of Calabria by car. Popular destinations include Le Castella and its white-sand beaches (83 kilometres away) and Castello Ruffo, where Odysseus and his men are said to have met the cyclops in the Odyssey (114 kilometres away). Villa San Giovanni, the crossing point from Messine in Sicily, is within a convenient driving distance (121 kilometres) and from there you can reach Catania and Syracuse.
The thermal spa in the Sambiase district of Lamezia Terme houses ancient thermal springs and mud baths which are well worth a visit. According to legend, the 2,000 year-old-spa and its waters possess restorative and therapeutic powers, enjoyed by visitors throughout Roman, Greek and Norman times. Hop in your car rental to discover this historic and relaxing place, only a short 12 minute drive away.
An hour away by car, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Island is a fantastic attraction to see while in Calabria. Perched on a rocky mound in the Tyrrhenian Sea, this 6th century monastery looks like something out of Game of Thrones. Originally an island, the land has built up around the Sanctuary of Santa Maria to connect it to the mainland and it is accessible via stairs built into the cliff face. Spectacular to behold, legend has it the monastery was founded by Hercules himself.
