Discover Naples and surroundings by car
Located on the west of Italy facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, Naples is a colossal metropolis best explored by car. There’s so much to see and do in this culturally important region with a tour of Mount Vesuvius sure to be the highlight of any trip.
The historic ruins of Pompeii, which was largely destroyed during the volcanic eruption of 79 AD, will also take your breath away with points of interest including the Amphitheatre, the casa del Fauno, the Temple of Apollo and the Temple of Jupiter. You may also want to pass by Herculaneum, an archaeological area that was also destroyed during the eruption.
If you want to unravel more of Naples’ ancient history, don’t miss the San Gennaro Catacombs – a network of underground tunnels and passages lined with crypts and graves. From there, head to the Castel Nuovo which dominates the Naples skyline and dates back to 1282.
While Naples is a gripping city that’s sure to leave you totally in awe, there are also many other places nearby that are well worth a day trip – and with a hire car, you can plan the very best excursions. Sorrento is just a short drive south and as the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, it’s the perfect base if you fancy checking out some of Italy’s top beaches.
Driving in Naples
When driving in Italy, always stay on the right hand side of the road unless you are overtaking. Take great care when navigating unfamiliar destinations and always pay attention to local signage including speed limits. As a visitor to Naples, you should know that traffic congestion can be a problem, but you can avoid the worst of it by using one of the open air car parks on the outskirts of the city. If you want to drive into the centre, you will find limited on-street parking marked by blue lines as well as a selection of designated parking garages.
It’s also worth noting that Centro Storico, Mezzocannone and Piazza del Gesù are part of the ZTL zone (“Zona Traffico Limitato”). Access to the ZTL is only reserved for special permit holders and is controlled by cameras.
