With a hire car, you’ll be well-placed to see some of the best locations with Frankfurt’s Old Town being the first port of call for many visitors. Decorated with century-old buildings, winding streets and open-fronted shops, this quaint part of the city is unforgettable with the picturesque public square, Römer, pulsing with life throughout the day and night.
Frankfurt’s Museum District is also a delight for anyone longing to find out more about the history of the area. Located on the left bank of the river, the complex of 12 separate museums is truly awe-inspiring and includes the Museum of World Cultures, the German Architectural Museum, the Film Museum and the Museum of Applied Art.
Other attractions include Goethe House – where Germany’s most famous writer, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, was born – as well as the Old Opera House, St. Bartholomew's Cathedral, St. Paul’s Church, The Palm Garden and Zoo Frankfurt.
With a hire car to hand you can also explore the area more extensively with a trip to Rhine Valley to the west of Frankfurt being well-worth your time. The 100 kilometre drive south to Heidelberg makes for a great day trip and (if you’re feeling adventurous), you could even continue south-east to Munich or make your way north-east to the capital, Berlin.
Driving in Frankfurt
While major routes are well-maintained and signposted throughout Frankfurt, narrow roads are commonplace throughout the city. As Germany is leading the way in reducing carbon emissions, there are also environmental zones to watch out for. All green areas are signposted with the text “umwelt” encircled in red.
With regards to parking, leaving your car on the street can be really difficult. Spaces are limited making it easier to use one of the off-street parking garages in the city. Alternatively you can make use of the cheap Park and Ride services which operate from the outskirts of Frankfurt.
