Discover Frankfurt and surroundings by car
With a vehicle to hand you’ll be geared up to explore the very best of this artistic and visually impressive city. There’s something for everyone here and while museum lovers can head to the Museum of Modern Art or the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History, shopaholics can make their way to the pedestrian only shopping district of Zeil.
Nestled within the Old Town also lies the historic heart of Frankfurt, a public square locally known as Römerberg (Roman Mountain). Here, you will find a great array of picturesque buildings with the City Hall flanked by colourful half-timbered houses. The central fountain reportedly ran with wine during the 1612 coronation of Emperor Matthias, with the square’s colourful history making it a renowned landmark. If you happen to visit during the Christmas period, don’t miss the traditional market which takes place here annually.
There is plenty to see and do in Frankfurt itself with a walk over the Iron Bridge certainly being a highlight, but if you want to venture further afield – you can. Being centrally located, Frankfurt is surrounded by famous Germany cities that are within easy reach by car. Bonn is less than two hours away and if you continue north-west you will also discover Cologne and Dusseldorf.
As a gateway to many picturesque districts, hiring a car certainly won’t go to waste in Germany.
Driving in Frankfurt
When navigating around Frankfurt you can make use of the many road signs as well as the River Main to help get your bearings. Many of our vehicles also have inbuilt navigation systems to help you get from A to B with ease. The roads are generally very well-maintained but if you venture into more rural areas, take extra care as signage will be sparser and the roads may deteriorate.
Remember to drive on the right in Germany and overtake on the left. There are many powerful and fast cars on the roads so drive carefully and do not break the speed limit.
As Germany is passionate about reducing its carbon footprint you will also find environmental zones in Frankfurt and throughout the country. These are clearly signposted with the text “umwelt” encircled in red.
With regards to parking, leaving your car on the street can be really difficult. Spaces are limited making it easier to use one of the off-street parking garages in the city. Alternatively you can make use of the cheap Park and Ride services which operate from the outskirts of Frankfurt.
