Discover Paris and surroundings by car
As one of the most picturesque and culturally rich cities in the world, Paris is a memorable city that’s great to explore by car. When you pick up a vehicle from the airport, you can make your way to some of the best attractions which, aside from popular sites like the Eiffel Tower and The Louvre, also include lesser-known spots such as La Gaîté Lyrique – a wonderfully unique museum focussed on art and creativity in a digital age – and Le Ballon de Paris which is as tall as a twelve-story building and offers incredible views across the city.
Wherever you go, it’s a great idea to park up and explore a little by foot as Paris is renowned for its host of secret gems, hidden plazas and quirky shopping streets.
If an onward adventure calls, you’ve Disneyland Paris just over forty kilometres from the city centre and then there’s Versailles to the south-west where you’ll find the popular Palace of Versailles. Great places for a day trip also include Provins a quaint medieval city to the south-east of Paris and Rouen, a charming town in the Normandy region to the north of Paris.
Driving in Paris
When in Paris, always stay on the right hand side of the road, unless you are overtaking, and follow local signage. Avoid travelling during rush hour periods which fall roughly from 7-9 in the morning and 5-8 in the evening. Never beep your horn in the city centre as this is illegal unless a crash is imminent.
With regards to parking up and leaving your vehicle, on-street parking is difficult to find. If you struggle to find a vacant bay, you may prefer to use one of the underground parking garages which tend to be open around the clock for your convenience. Many tourists also park on the outskirts of the city where parking is cheaper and easier to find – and make use of public transport systems.
